The Indian government, in an effort to maintain the supply and prices of onions within the country and prevent hoarding, has imposed a ban on onion exports. As a result, there has been a sudden increase in the price of onions in the domestic market. The National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate has initiated a campaign to stabilize onion prices and ensure normal supply.
On Saturday (December 9th), between 11 am and 2 pm, officials of the Directorate conducted the campaign in the Karnaphuli Market in the city, imposing fines of one lakh taka each on five establishments. Through the campaign, a total of 133 establishments in 57 markets across the country were fined a total of six lakh sixty-six thousand taka. This information has been disclosed by the Consumer Rights Protection Directorate, according to sources.
Today, the price of local onions in the capital has increased from 70 to 80 taka per kilogram. They are being sold at 200 to 220 taka per kilogram. Indian onions are being sold at 180 to 190 taka per kilogram.
In the vegetable markets of the capital last Thursday, local onions were sold at 120 to 140 taka per kilogram, and Indian onions were sold at 110 to 120 taka per kilogram. The price per kilogram increased by 10 to 20 taka. Last Friday, local onions were sold at 140 to 160 taka per kilogram, and Indian onions were sold at 120 to 130 taka per kilogram.

On Saturday, information gathered while visiting Shyambazar, Rampura, Badda, and Jhawar Sahara markets in the capital and talking to traders revealed these details.
