Several prominent candidates have lost in the 12th parliamentary elections.
Some of them are Jatiya Party (JaPa) Chairman Anwar Hossain Manju, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal President Hasanul Haq Inu, Bikalpa Dhara Joint Secretary General Mahi B Chowdhury, Trinamool BNP Chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury and Secretary General Taimur Alam Khandaker.
Many defeated candidates declined to comment right away, stating that a formal response would be given.
Among the heavyweight candidates, two of the six candidates supported by the ruling Awami League-led 14-party alliance have been elected.
Seven-time MP Anwar Hossain Manju lost the election from the Pirojpur-2 constituency.
When asked about the results, the senior leader said: “Of course the election was correct.”
Hasanul Haq Inu was the nominee of the 14-party alliance in the Kushtia-2 constituency.
He said: “Rezaul Karim Tansen won the Bogra-4 constituency from our party. What can I say about the election now, let the results of the whole country come.”
The top leaders of the Trinamool BNP have also lost the election.
Narayanganj-1 and Sylhet-6 candidates Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury and Taimur Alam Khandaker also lost the race.
In this regard, Mobin Chowdhury said: “None of our candidates won. I’m not going to talk about the election. We will talk to those who have nominated us and inform them about the party’s position.”
Taimur Alam Khandaker said: “I will talk to the chairman after my health improves. There is no point in boycotting the election.”
Meanwhile, Mahi B Chowdhury, could not be reached by phone.
Balloting in the 12th national polls in Bangladesh ended on Sunday amidst a largely peaceful environment.
Voting began at 8am at 261,912 polling booths in 42,024 voting centres and continued until 4pm with 299 parliamentary seats up for election.
