“The people have voted for Jatiya Party with a lot of expectations. We will go to Parliament to reflect the aspirations of the people,” he said after exchanging views with Jatiya Party nominees at his residence in Rangpur city on Tuesday evening.
“Although our seats are limited in number, the people have elected our candidates with their various expectations. That’s why we’ll will go to the parliament and take oaths of office,” he said.
In response to the question of who will be the opposition party in the parliament, Quader said, “After Awami League, the Jatiya Party has got the highest number of seats. That is why we will remain the main opposition party.”
The BNP’s election boycott in 2014 helped the Jatiya party emerge as the main opposition in Parliament. It retained the position in the 11th parliament when the BNP tanked in the election.
HM Ershad floated the Jatiya Party on January 1, 1986. Despite his ouster in the early ‘90s, he survived the pitfalls and his party emerged as a key factor in politics. It is currently headed by his younger brother GM Quader.
The Awami League secured a two-thirds majority, bagging 222 seats, in the election. It is preparing to form the government for the fourth consecutive term and the fifth since 1996, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
