The actress and singer will help place the franchise in Puerto Rico, the same Caribbean island she descends from.
Bob, or Roberto, will be voiced by Hamilton star Anthony Ramos, who is also producing the film.
The announcement comes from toy maker Mattel, who owns the rights to the popular children’s show and last year successfully brought its character Barbie to theatres.
The company said the film will “dig deeper into what it means to build” while also celebrating Caribbean Latin nations.
Bob the Builder first hit television screens in 1999 on BBC TV in the UK, eventually being broadcast in North America on Nick Jr. from 2001 and PBS from 2005.
The eponymous character, known for his phrase “can we fix it? Yes, we can!”, teams up with his human and machine friends to “work together to get the job done”.
Ramos said he was proud to add elements of life to the film “inspired by my own”.
“[It will be] a movie about friends working together, a celebration of a beautiful home they share, and how love can help to conquer any obstacle in your way,” he said.
