The High Court on Thursday asked the health secretary and Directorate General of Medical Education to reserve a 5 per cent quota for the children and grandchildren of freedom fighters in the admission for MBBS and BDS courses in 2023-2024 academic session.
The bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah issued the directive after hearing a public interest litigation writ petition filed by Ohidul Islam, the president of Central Command Council of Children and Generations of Freedom Fighters.
The petitioner challenged the legality of a notification issued by Directorate General of Medical Education on January 10 instructing admission seekers that 2 per cent, instead of 5 per cent, seats would be reserved for the children and grandchildren of freedom fighters.
The petitioner’ lawyer Muntasir Uddin Ahmed told the court that the directorate’s admission circular for reserving 2 per cent quota was a clear violation of a High Court’s March 6, 2014’s verdict that asked the authorities to reserve 5 per cent quota instead of 2 per cent in the admission.
