Bangladesh and India have been declared joint champions after dramatic twists and turns in the final match of the SAFF U-19 Women’s Championship.
Due to the draw in the tiebreaker after extra time, the match referees declared India winner through a coin toss. However, the Bangladesh team expressed dissatisfaction with this decision.
As per tournament rules, sudden death will continue as long as there is a tie. However, Sri Lankan match commissioner De Silva Dylan decided to go for a toss after the score was tied at 11-11 in sudden death.
Bangladesh did not oppose this decision at the time of the toss. However, Bangladesh captain Afida Khatun objected after losing the toss. The team’s coach and staff were also not happy with the decision.
Bangladesh’s objection was that the match commissioner decided to go for another sudden death, which India objected to.
India left the field, protesting the match commissioner’s decision. According to the bylaws, if India did not return to the field within time, Bangladesh was supposed to be declared the champion. However, the officials declared both teams joint winners.
