Twenty-three armed Myanmar nationals who intruded into Bangladesh during the ongoing fighting with rebels at the border have been prosecuted by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
A case was filed under the firearms act at Ukhiya Police Station on Friday (Feb 9) on behalf of BGB. The armed Myanmar nationals have been handed over to police, Cox’s Bazar police chief Md Mahafuzul Islam said.
Border guards did not comment on the development.
Several hundred Myanmar nationals, mostly its border police members, have fled to Bangladesh since fighting intensified against rebels along the border. The junta forces are losing ground in northern Rakhine as well as elsewhere.
Bangladesh has shown extreme restraint during this internal conflict. This morning, volleys of shots were fired from Myanmar after Bangladeshi forces neutralised an unexploded mortar shell at the border.
