7yr-old child rape case: Youth gets life imprisonment in Rajshahi

A man has been sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment for raping a seven-year-old first grader in Rajshahi’s Durgapur.
Nadim Islam has also been fined Tk 20,000 by Rajshahi Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 Judge Muhammad Hasanuzzaman on Sunday (March 10).
According to case details, the convict went to the victim’s house in the same upazila on September 25, 2022, to collect money from her father. Only the child was home at that time.
Taking advantage of this situation, Nadim took the girl into the house and raped her. People rushed in hearing her scream, detained the rapist and handed him over to police.
Her father filed a case accusing Nadim.
Legal aid and human rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) said 573 women were raped in Bangladesh in 2023. Of them, 94 were aged below 12 years.
Bangladesh approved the death penalty as the highest punishment for rape after a series of high-profile sexual assault cases set off widespread protests in 2021.
