At least 35 people were burnt after a gas cylinder exploded at Konabari of Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred at around 5:45pm at the house of one Shafik Khan in Telirchala area in Kaliakoir.
According to the locals, Shafik brought a gas cylinder. When he tried to connect the cylinder to the oven, gas started leaking. Later, he threw the cylinder onto the nearby road. There was an earthen oven near the cylinder and the fire had originated from the oven that instantly led to the explosion of the cylinder. At least 35 people were injured in the incident.
At least 13 of the injured have been identified.
They are Soleman (7), Sadia (18), Sufia (9), Meraj (13), Tarek (18), Ariful Islam (40), Mashiur (22), Mannaf (17), Sumon (25), Yashin (21). , Shilpi (30), Saidul Islam (30), and Golam Rabbi (11).
They were treated at several wards at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery with burn injuries, said Health Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen.
He said that the condition of 10 people is critical. They suffered 90 to 100 percent burns. Five people, including children, have been kept in the ICU and four in the High Defense Unit (HDU), Dr Sen added.
Locals said a fire broke out in a cooking gas cylinder at a house in Telir Chala area of Mouchak in Kaliakair Upazila of the district around 6:00 pm. When the residents of the house threw it out on the road, the explosion occurred.
They were first taken to nearby hospitals. Later, they were shifted to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
