At least eight people including six members of a family, were killed and several others injured in separate road crashes in Sylhet and Pirojpur districts on Monday.
Six members of a family, including two children, were killed and four others injured after a pick-up van collided with a human hauler on Sylhet-Tamabil Highway in Darbasta area of Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet on Monday.
The accident occurred at 11:45am on Sylhet-Tamabil Highway.
The deceased were identified as Mongali Patra, 55, daughter of Santosh Patra of Chiknagul union of Jaintapur upazila, Sabita Patra, 35, wife of Nanda Patra, 6-month-old Bijli, daughter of Suchita Patra, Susmita Patra, 35, wife of Krishna Patra, Ritu Patra, 08, son of Sukendu Patra and Shamola Patra, 65.
According to locals, a pickup van and a human hauler, locally known as Leguna, collided on the highway in front of the Sylhet Polli Bidyut office, leaving 10 persons critically injured.
Of the 10 injured, six died after they were taken to hospital.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Jaintapur Model Police Station Tajul Islam said they visited the place of occurrence.
He said the victims were going to Mokampunji from Chiknagul to attend a family programme.
Meanwhile, two motorcyclists were killed and two other injured in a collision between two bikes at Pirojpur Sadar upazila on Monday morning.
The accident took place around 8.30am at Mallikbari area under the upazila.
The deceased were Md Hasib Sheikh, 26, son of Malek Sheikh, a resident of Umedpur area under Indurkani upazila, and Masum Billah, 50, son of Nur Mohammad, of Kathalia upazila in Jhalakathi district.
According to witnesses, the accident occurred when a Parerhat-bound bike collided head-on with an another Indurkani-bound motorcycle in Mallikbari stand area, leaving four people critically injured.
They all were taken to Pirojpur General Hospital where the on-duty physicians declared Hasib and Masum dead upon arrival.
Dr Swagata Halder, on-duty doctor of the upazila health complex, said the duo were brought dead in the hospital and two other injured were sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Pirojpur Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Md Asikuzzaman confirmed the death matter, adding that they have visited the area and legal actions were being taken in this regard.
