Warrant issued for Hasina’s arrest

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued an arrest warrant against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in July-August genocide case. The tribunal also ordered law enforcement agencies to produce her by November 18. Sheikh Hasina is currently staying in India.

Around 12:30PM on Thursday, a three-member ICT bench, led by Golam Mortuza Majumdar, issued this order following a petition by Chief Prosecutor Adv Mohammad Tajul Islam.

The arrest warrant also issued against 45 people, including former minister Obaidul Quader.

The chief prosecutor applied for an arrest warrant against Sheikh Hasina in the morning.

Tajul Islam presented the description of all the murders, massacres, extrajudicial killings and Pilkhana killings during Sheikh Hasina’s rule.

List of those killed in mass upsurge

The interim government published a draft list of 708 people killed during the student-led mass upsurge in July and August.

Quoting the available public reports by media and the protest movement itself, the UN rights body said between 16 July and 11 August, more than 600 people were killed, according to the report titled ‘Preliminary Analysis of Recent Protests and Unrest in Bangladesh’.

Of these, nearly 400 deaths were reported from 16 July to 4 August, while around 250 people were reportedly killed following the new wave of protests between 5 and 6 August.
