Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao announced their divorce in 2021. The couple was married for almost 16 years before they announced their separation. Despite the divorce, Aamir and Kiran have not only remained friends but they have also collaborated professionally. Aamir had produced Kiran’s Laapataa Ladies, which could stand a chance to head to Oscars. In a recent interview, Aamir said that the divorce just moved them away from the ideology and responsibilities of a husband and wife. However, it didn’t impact their partnership.
“Divorce did not affect our relationship — whether it was professionally or personally. I think we felt (the split) happened organically. Divorce is a word that implies you are leaving, you are moving away. We were moving away as husband and wife, but we were not moving away as human beings. So I don’t think that also caused any problems (in their working relationship),” Aamir said, in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India.
Speaking about continuing to work with Aamir despite their divorce, Kiran said that it has been amazing working with him and called him a power house. “The thing is that divorce is a separate topic. As creative people, we gel very well and we like each other’s minds and we trust each other’s minds. I guess that’s why we work very well, our sensibilities are similar,” Aamir added. Kiran added that when they have a disagreement, they sit down and reason things out. “We respect each other’s opinions. I think that’s one of the reasons the partnership lasted,” Kiran shared.

Aamir and Kiran met on the set of Lagaan in 2001, where Kiran was an assistant director. While there wasn’t a close connection initially, Aamir later described how a single phone conversation with Kiran made him realise how happy he felt talking to her. After Aamir’s first marriage to Reena Dutta ended in 2002, he and Kiran grew closer and eventually married on December 28, 2005.
Over their 16 years of marriage, they shared many personal and professional experiences, including the birth of their son Azad in 2011 via surrogacy. In July 2021, Aamir and Kiran announced their divorce.
