Police have arrested three teenagers in connection with the fatal stabbing of Zahidul Islam Parvez, a student of Primeasia University, during a raid in Dhaka’s Mohakhali area late Sunday night.
The arrestees — Md Al Kamal Sheikh (19), Alvi Hossain Junaid (19), and Al Alim Sunny (19) — were taken into custody from the Wireless Gate area, confirmed Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rasel Sarwar.
Although none of the arrestees are enrolled at Primeasia University, CCTV footage placed them at the scene of the crime.
“Our initial investigation indicates their involvement in the murder. We are using information from their interrogation to trace the main accused and others connected to the incident,” OC Rasel said.
According to Banani Police Station Inspector (Operations) AKM Moinuddin, the three teens are school friends of the primary suspects, all of whom studied together at Banani Bidyaniketan School.
“They were called to the scene by the main suspects,” he added, noting that the arrestees are currently seeking university admission.
Parvez, a student from the 223rd batch of the Textile Engineering Department, was fatally stabbed on Saturday afternoon near a tea stall close to the university.
The attack reportedly stemmed from a minor altercation between students, according to his classmates.
A murder case was filed by the victim’s cousin, Humayun Kabir, naming eight individuals — Mehraj Islam (20), Abu Zar Gifari Pias (20), Mahathir Hasan (20), Sobhan Niaz Tushar (24), Hridoy Miyazi (23), Rifat (21), Ali (21), and Fahim (22) — along with 25 to 30 unidentified others.
Two of the named suspects, Tushar and Hridoy, have been identified as leaders of the Banani unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, holding the positions of joint convener and joint member secretary, respectively.
The incident has since sparked political friction.
The Chhatra Dal claimed at a press briefing on Sunday that the attackers were affiliated with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and alleged that Parvez was a Chhatra Dal activist.
In response, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement issued a statement via Facebook, denying any involvement and accusing Chhatra Dal of spreading false information.
Police investigations are ongoing.
