Rail services on the Cox’s Bazar route have been suspended following a collision between a pilot engine and a stone-laden coach in this new rail project.
Assistant Locomaster Jahirul Alam was injured in the accident that occurred in the Ramu-Islamabad area around 5pm on Monday.
Due to the accident, the Cox’s Bazar-bound Parjatak Express could not depart at its scheduled time of 8pm. Passengers of the Dhaka-bound Intercity train were waiting at the station since the latest information continued stating that the train was expected to depart at 10pm, report agencies.
Chittagong Railway Station Master Jafar Alam said due to the accident in the Ramu-Islamabad area, train operations on this route have been suspended. The resumption of normal train services on this route is yet to be determined.
Saiful Islam, deputy manager of Chittagong Railway Division, mentioned that a pair of wheels of the stone-laden coach from Max Construction derailed from the track. The Cox’s Bazar railway track is still closed. Rescue operations are currently underway.
