The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) arrested six members of an organised gang, who stole millions of money by scamming people in the name of teaching freelancing, from Uttara area in Dhaka on Tuesday.
The arrestees are Shamim Ahmed, 32, Zahidul Islam, 24, Mahidul Haque, 30, Ashraful Islam, 26, Ehsan Mashfi, 24 and Roni Sardar, 28, reports BSS.
“A team of Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) raided Sector-6 area of Uttara (East) police station at around 7:15 pm and arrested them. During the raid, 6 SSD cards, 4 hard disks, 4 tabs and 1 laptop were recovered from their possession,” said Wahida Parveen, Senior ASP and Assistant Director of ATU.
“Many people are earning money by working successfully in various freelancing sites or marketplaces. Taking advantage of this popularity of freelancing, the scammers established ‘Upspot Academy’. They collected a huge amount of money by offering various courses to jobless people and students.”
On January 18, a victim filed a case with Ashulia police station in this regard.
According to the case, the group through its Facebook page offered 165 sessions of fake courses with 300 students in each batch in the last two years.
They collected Tk 2,500 from each student but did not provide any training to them.
