US is happy with Bangladesh: Momen

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on Tuesday said diplomats from the big countries literally insist on purchasing their various products, but Bangladesh does not take it negatively.
“It is part of their responsibility and duty. All envoys do this. We also do the same, but it is not like them (foreign diplomats),” he told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The foreign minister made the remarks when his attention was drawn about the US proposal to Bangladesh for purchasing Boeing aircraft.
He said it is not true that such proposals are coming ahead of the next national election, it was under discussion long ago.
Momen said the government is eyeing diversification of its purchase for the Biman fleet and decided to buy from Airbus.
He, however, said the government is facing financial difficulties at this moment, but it will go for procurement when the financial condition improves.
Momen said Boeing is offering lower price now once Bangladesh agreed to purchase from Airbus.
“They request us but we do not take it as a pressure on us,” he added.
Responding to a question, Momen said the US is very happy with its relations with Bangladesh.
“We are looking forward to building a better and stronger relationship with the US,” he said.
Ruling out any discomfort between the two countries, Momen said both the US and Bangladesh want free and fair elections in Bangladesh.
In addition, he said the US wants “non-violent” elections.
Momen said the government cannot guarantee it as it depends on sincerity and willingness of all in leadership positions.
“We have very good relations with the US. The relationship is very cordial,” he added.
Momen said an election wave is sweeping across the country, and participatory election means people’s participation.
He said friendly countries like the US give suggestions to Bangladesh, and Bangladesh accepts those suggestions that look good for the country.
