Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres reached a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya of Cox’s Bazar on Friday (March 14).
They spoke to the Rohingya victims and heard heart-wrenching descriptions of the genocide committed against them in Myanmar.
On Friday (March 14) afternoon, they went directly from Cox’s Bazar Airport to the Extended Rohingya Camp No. 20 in Ukhiya.
Badar Alam, a resident of H/2, Block-3 of Extended Camp 20, told reporters, “Our Majhira (Rohingya leaders) have given the UN Secretary-General a detailed description of the atrocities in Myanmar. How houses and families were burned, relatives were killed in front of our eyes, genocide was committed—everything has been highlighted.”
He also said, “We are willing to return to our country if the conditions are accepted.” The Rohingya community leaders have conveyed this matter to the UN Secretary-General and the Chief Adviser to the interim government.”
Some students at the Learning Center said that the UN Secretary-General listened to them carefully and asked them why they fled Myanmar and came to Bangladesh. He assured them of a stronger role from the international community.
The Chief Adviser and the UN Secretary-General then visited the Rohingya Cultural Memorial Center and relief distribution center. They are scheduled to have an iftar with the Rohingya after meeting with the Rohingya community leaders in the afternoon.
