DE Online Desk :
Earlier this year in January, Bangladesh missed their first opportunity to directly qualify for the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup.
A series win against the West Indies would have secured their spot in the ICC’s marquee tournament, but the chance slipped away.
Now, the Tigresses find themselves once again facing off with the Caribbean side — but this time, in a final do-or-die group match of the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.
Failing to win the series against the Windies meant Bangladesh had to go through the qualification process.
They got off to a strong start, cruising past Thailand, Ireland, and Scotland in their first three games. However, trouble struck in their fourth match.
Bangladesh posted 227 runs for 9 wickets in the allotted 50 overs against the West Indies, but the Caribbean side chased down the target in 46 overs, losing only 7 wickets.
Now, the equation is simple — Bangladesh face hosts Pakistan today in a crucial match that will determine their World Cup fate.
The game kicks off at 10:30 AM Bangladesh time at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground.
Pakistan have already qualified, winning all four of their previous matches. That leaves only one remaining spot up for grabs.
Heading into the final day of group fixtures, Bangladesh were competing with Scotland and the West Indies for that last qualification spot.
However, Scotland’s loss to Ireland yesterday took them out of the running.
Ireland, already out of contention, delivered the upset that narrowed the race to just Bangladesh and the West Indies.
Bangladesh currently sit second on the table with 6 points from 4 matches, and a win today would take them to 8 points — sealing World Cup qualification regardless of any other results.
The West Indies will play against Thailand at 3 PM today. They will be hoping for a Bangladesh loss to keep their hopes alive.
One big advantage for Bangladesh is their healthy net run rate (+1.033), which means that even a narrow loss against Pakistan could still keep them in the hunt — provided the West Indies don’t win by a massive margin.
The Caribbean side, currently handicapped by a negative net run rate (–0.283), would need a dominant win over Thailand to overtake Bangladesh in such a scenario.
In short, the West Indies will be hoping for a Bangladesh defeat.
But if Bangladesh manage to beat Pakistan this morning, the second match of the day — West Indies vs Thailand — will become a mere formality, as the Tigresses will have already booked their ticket to the 2025 ODI World Cup.
