Bangladesh have secured their place in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup for the second successive time, despite falling to a seven-wicket defeat against Pakistan in their final qualifier match on Saturday.
The Tigresses started their World Cup Qualifier campaign on a strong note, registering three consecutive victories.
However, back-to-back losses to the West Indies and hosts Pakistan put their qualification hopes in jeopardy.
With qualification hanging in the balance, Bangladesh secured their place due to their superior net run rate (0.639) over the West Indies (0.626), who also ended the group stage with six points after beating Thailand by six wickets.
Led by captain Nigar Sultana Joty, Bangladesh finished second in the standings behind Pakistan, who topped the table with a perfect record.
In Saturday’s clash at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Bangladesh elected to bat but once again struggled with the bat.
The top order collapsed early, slumping to 21-3.
Ritu Moni’s determined 48 off 76 balls, supported by Fahima Khatun’s unbeaten 44 off 53 deliveries, helped the side reach 178-9—their lowest total in the tournament.
Pakistan chased down the target with ease in 39.4 overs, riding on half-centuries from Muneeba Ali (69 off 93) and Aliya Riaz (52 off 65). For Bangladesh, Marufa Akter, Nahida Akter and Rabeya Khan each picked up a wicket.
Bangladesh, who made their maiden appearance in the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2022, will now return to the main stage as one of the eight teams competing in the 2025 edition, scheduled to be held in India from September 29 to October 26.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruque Ahmed praised the team’s achievement, stating:“I congratulate our team on securing a place in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. I would also like to sincerely thank the coaching staff and team management for their tireless efforts behind the scenes.”
“As we look ahead to the World Cup in India, I urge the players to remain focused and determined in their preparation. The BCB stands fully behind you and will ensure all necessary support. We believe in your talent and potential to make the nation proud on the world stage,” he added.
