A member of the Bangladesh Army was shot early Saturday while attempting to prevent a robbery at Mekhal in Hathazari upazila.
The victim, Shahidul Islam Sayem, a local resident and currently on leave from the Army, sustained bullet injuries during the confrontation.
According to Nazmul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Hathazari Model Police Station, a group of four masked robbers stormed Gausia Grocers, a shop owned by Sayem’s elder brother, holding the shopkeeper at gunpoint and looting valuables.
Sayem, who noticed the robbery through CCTV surveillance, rushed to the scene in an attempt to intervene.
The robbers, sensing a threat, opened fire on him before fleeing. Sayem was immediately transported to the Combined Military Hospital for medical treatment.
Police said preparations are underway to file a case over the incident.
Notably, this incident comes just days after another robbery took place on April 19 at a residence in Ward No. 6 of Dhalai Union under Hathazari.
