The Election Commission (EC) has decided to postpone the election to the Naogaon-2 constituency following the death of independent candidate Aminul Haque.
Ashok Kumar Debnath, additional secretary of the EC, made the announcement on Friday in a press conference at the EC hours after the death of Aminul, a former Awami League leader from Naogaon-2 (Patnitola and Dhamoirhat).
He was undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital. Aminul got his electoral symbol on Thursday after a High Court directive restored his candidacy.
A fresh schedule for the Naogaon-2 polls will be announced soon, said the additional secretary.
Aminul breathed his last early Friday while undergoing treatment at United Hospital in the capital, said his son Asiful Haque.
Asiful said his father went to Dhaka on Monday to attend the hearing of a case and he was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday night after he had fallen sick.
His father had suffered from various complications, including diabetes and heart disease, he added.
Aminul first bought Awami League’s nomination for Naogaon-2 seat to contest in the national election but did not get the ruling party ticket.
