A Bangladeshi national was reportedly shot dead by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) early Sunday in the 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
The deceased, identified as Obaidur Rahman, 37, was the son of Hanif Mondol from Gopalpur village under Maheshpur upazila in Jhenaidah, a district bordering India.
According to local sources, a group of seven to eight individuals from Gopalpur crossed the border into India late Saturday night.
Around 1:30am, they encountered BSF personnel, who allegedly opened fire.
While most of the group managed to retreat back to Bangladesh, Obaidur and another member could not escape.
Sources from across the border claimed that BSF members detained Obaidur, subjected him to physical assault, and subsequently shot him dead.
On Sunday morning, residents of Madhupur in 24 Parganas found a body lying near the border area.
Police from Bagda police station later recovered it.
