At least seven people lost their lives in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Kishoreganj and Brahmanbaria districts on Sunday, as seasonal thunderstorms swept through parts of the country.
In Kishoreganj, three individuals, including a college student, were killed in different upazilas during sudden bouts of lightning.
Faruk Mia, 60, from Rasulpur village in Bhairab upazila, was fatally struck while harvesting paddy in a haor area around 4:30pm, according to local residents.
In a separate incident, Foysal Mia, 28, of Srinagar union in the same upazila, was killed by lightning while he was outside during the rain.
In Kuliarchar upazila, Kabir Hosain, a student of Hazi Asmat College, was hit by lightning while working in a field in the afternoon.
Umme Habiba, a medical officer at Bhairab Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that all three victims were brought in dead.
In Brahmanbaria, four others died in similar incidents in Nasirnagar and Akhaura upazilas.
Police and local sources said Abdur Razzak of Tekanagar village in Nasirnagar died instantly when he was struck by lightning while cutting paddy.
Another victim, Shamsul Huda from the Beribadh area of the same upazila, was also killed while working in his field.
Meanwhile, two men—identified as Jamir Kha and Selim Mia—were killed in separate lightning strikes in Akhaura upazila during the afternoon storm.
Authorities have urged the public to take precautions during thunderstorms, particularly in open fields and low-lying areas that are prone to lightning activity during the pre-monsoon season.
