Actress Nusraat Faria Mazhar was released from Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail in Gazipur on Tuesday afternoon, hours after she was granted bail by a Dhaka court in an attempted murder case linked to last year’s July mass uprising.
Kashimpur Jail Senior Superintendent Kawalin Nahar confirmed the release, stating that Faria was handed over to her mother around 3:30pm.
Earlier in the day, the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court granted her bail following a hearing on a petition filed by her legal team.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mustafizur Rahman approved the bail on a bond of Tk 5,000.
The actress had been sent to jail on Monday after being produced before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nasrin Akter.
Sub-Inspector Billal Bhuiyan of Bhatara Police, who brought her before the court, had requested that she be kept in custody, with the bail hearing initially scheduled for May 22.
Faria was arrested on Sunday afternoon by immigration officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while attempting to board a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight to Thailand.
Her arrest triggered widespread reactions on social media, with political figures, interim government advisers, and fellow artistes expressing concern and condemning the move.
Nusraat Faria, a popular actress and media personality, has yet to make a public statement following her release.
