A Dhaka court on Monday ordered the imprisonment of popular actress Nusraat Faria in connection with an attempted murder case tied to a recent anti-discrimination movement.
Metropolitan Magistrate Naznin Akter passed the order after Faria was presented before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in the morning.
Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Billal Bhuiyan sought her detention, while her legal team filed a petition for bail.
Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki opposed the bail request, prompting the court to schedule a hearing on the matter for May 22.
Faria was detained by immigration police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday while attempting to travel to Thailand.
She was subsequently handed over to Bhatara police, who later transferred her to the Detective Branch for further interrogation.
Background of the Case
The case was filed on April 29 with Bhatara Police Station, a day after a court instructed police to accept the complaint.
According to the case statement, Faria is among several high-profile figures accused of involvement in an attempted murder during an anti-discrimination protest in Dhaka’s Bhatara area.
The complaint names 16 individuals directly, including fellow actors Apu Biswas, Nipun Akter, Ashna Habib Bhabna, Zayed Khan, and others.
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and over 280 additional individuals are also mentioned in the case.
Faria has been accused of financially supporting the ruling Awami League, which the complainant alleges took a hostile stance against the anti-discrimination movement.
Career HighlightsNusraat Faria began her career as a radio jockey before transitioning to television hosting in 2013.
She made her film debut in 2015 with Aashiqui, a Bangladesh-India joint venture that gained considerable attention.
Since then, she has featured in nearly 20 films across Dhallywood and Tollywood.
