Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruque Ahmed has firmly denied allegations linking him to the previous Awami League-led government, as well as claims of financial irregularities within the board.
Speaking at a prize-giving ceremony of a Third Division selection tournament on Saturday, Faruque dismissed the accusations as “entirely baseless,” emphasizing his neutrality and commitment to the game.
“I have no affiliation with fascism or any political entity. I am serving as BCB president under the current administration,” he stated.
“If there were even a shred of truth to these claims, would I still be in this position?”
The BCB chief’s remarks come amid growing scrutiny over board decisions, including reports alleging misuse of resources.
One specific claim accused Faruque of using BCB funds to accommodate a political associate from Narayanganj in a hotel—an allegation he categorically denied.
“We work hard and achieve a lot, but unfortunately, that gets overshadowed by negativity and speculation,” Faruque said.
“Constructive reporting is vital. Let the truth be known, and judge me on that basis.”
A major point of controversy surrounds the transfer of Tk 250 crore in fixed deposits to new banks, allegedly done without board approval.
Critics argued the move lacked transparency and bypassed proper procedures. While Faruque did not elaborate on the matter, the BCB later issued a clarification.
According to the board, Tk 238 crore was reallocated to banks rated ‘Green’ and ‘Yellow’ by Bangladesh Bank to ensure better security and improved interest returns, while Tk 12 crore was used for operational needs.
The BCB claimed the move resulted in a 2–5 percent increase in earnings.
Amid the ongoing debate, Faruque shifted focus to upcoming cricketing priorities, particularly Bangladesh’s scheduled home series against India in August, featuring three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and two Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
Concerns had recently emerged following an Indian media report suggesting the tour could be at risk due to diplomatic tensions.
However, Faruque dismissed the speculation, asserting that the series is set to proceed as planned.
“I’ve personally spoken with Jay Shah and Debojit Saikia. Jay Shah was BCCI secretary during our first talks and is now ICC chairman. Both have assured me there is no change—the tour will go ahead,” he confirmed.
