In a move aimed at enhancing internet accessibility and value for users, broadband subscribers across Bangladesh will now receive 10 Mbps internet speed for Tk 500, up from the previous 5 Mbps, the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) announced on Saturday.
Emdadul made the announcement on Saturday during a roundtable discussion titled “Challenges and Opportunities in the Internet Sector”, organised by the Telecom and Technology Reporters Network Bangladesh (TRNB) at the BTRC Auditorium in Agargaon, Dhaka.
“Starting today[Saturday], customers will receive 10 Mbps instead of 5 Mbps for the same price,” said Emdadul. He confirmed the speed upgrade is effective immediately.
Highlighting the growing demand for faster and more reliable internet, Emdadul noted that if the government extends policy support, ISPAB aims to offer 20 Mbps at the same price point in the near future.
“In today’s digital age, where internet usage is integral to daily life and economic growth, the minimum broadband speed should be at least 20 Mbps,” he stated.
To facilitate further improvements in the sector, ISPAB proposed several policy reforms, including resuming the licence upgrade process for ISPs equipped with advanced infrastructure, extending ISP licence validity to 10 years to boost investor confidence, and allowing fixed telecom service providers (FTSPs) to share bandwidth, NTTN transmission lines, and both active and passive infrastructure.
Industry insiders and participants at the event echoed similar sentiments, calling for greater collaboration between the private sector and regulatory bodies to accelerate digital transformation across the country.
