The University of Chittagong (CU) is set to host the largest convocation in Bangladesh’s history tomorrow (May 14), with a record-breaking 22,586 graduates scheduled to take part in the long-awaited ceremony—the first in nine years for the university.
The sprawling 2,300-acre hilltop campus has transformed into a festive hub in anticipation of the event, which marks CU’s fifth convocation since its establishment.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus will grace the occasion as the convocation speaker and will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree during the ceremony.
The formal programme will begin at 2:00 PM, preceded by a grand academic procession at 1:45 PM.To ensure smooth logistics, CU has arranged 100 buses and shuttle trains from the city.
In light of heightened security measures, entry of private vehicles onto the campus has been restricted.
The Special Security Force (SSF) and other law enforcement agencies have been deployed to maintain order.
A massive marquee has been installed at the central sports ground to accommodate graduates, faculty, and dignitaries, with additional facilities including medical support, catering, and guest lounges.
Large LED display screens have been set up across the campus for guardians and guests to follow the proceedings in real-time.
A full dress rehearsal was conducted on Monday, covering every detail—from gowning and the national anthem to certificate distribution and the arrival protocol for dignitaries.
Graduates collected their academic regalia over the past days, many capturing heartfelt moments with classmates and family members in iconic campus locations.
CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Muhammad Yeahia Akhter described the atmosphere as electric:“The campus feels like it’s celebrating Eid. Months of planning and dedication have brought us here. We are honoured to host Professor Yunus and call upon the cooperation of all stakeholders to ensure a seamless event.”
Graduates, many returning to campus after several years, expressed joy and nostalgia.
Shahidul Sumon, a graduate from the Department of Communication and Journalism, shared,“It’s surreal to be back, reconnecting with old friends after seven years. I’ve brought my wife—also a CU graduate—to share this moment.”
The convocation is not only a celebration of academic achievement but also a reflection of CU’s enduring legacy and growing role in higher education in Bangladesh.
