A Dhaka University student was tragically stabbed to death in the early hours of Wednesday near Suhrawardy Udyan, adjacent to the university campus.
The deceased, Shahriar Alam Shammo, 25, was a student of the International Relations department from the 2018–19 academic session.
He was a resident of Sir AF Rahman Hall and originally hailed from Ullapara upazila in Sirajganj.
Shammo was also known for his political involvement, serving as the literature and publication secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).
According to Md Faruq, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police camp, Shammo was brought to the emergency department in a critical condition by his classmates shortly after the incident.
However, doctors on duty declared him dead upon arrival.
“He sustained a stab wound to his right thigh, likely inflicted with a sharp weapon,” said Faruq.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred following a collision between Shammo’s motorcycle and another near Suhrawardy Udyan.
A verbal altercation escalated into a physical confrontation, during which the other rider allegedly stabbed Shammo before fleeing the scene.
The identity of the attacker remains unknown as of now.Md Khalid Mansur, Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station, confirmed that an investigation is underway to ascertain the motive and identify the perpetrator.
In the wake of the killing, students of Dhaka University staged a protest around 1:50 am at the Sir AF Rahman Hall premises, demanding justice for Shammo and swift action to apprehend those responsible.
Authorities have yet to make any arrests, and further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
