A Dhaka court on Sunday rejected the bail plea of Shamima Akter Khanam, a former Krishak League leader and ex-MP from a reserved seat in Sunamganj, sending her to jail in connection with the murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim during political unrest in October last year.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqur Rahman passed the order following a hearing, after Shamima was produced before the court earlier in the day.
Advocate Farzana Yeasmin, representing Shamima, filed the bail petition on her behalf, which was opposed by the prosecution citing the gravity of the charges.
Shamima was arrested by detectives on Saturday from Dhaka’s Jigatola area as part of the investigation into the high-profile case.
The case stems from violence that broke out during rival political rallies held in the capital on October 28, 2023.
The BNP had announced a grand rally as part of its central programme, while the ruling Awami League organized a counter-rally on the same day.
Jubo Dal leader Shamim was killed during the ensuing clashes between opposing political groups.
Following the incident, a case was filed with Paltan Police Station on September 24, 2024, naming several suspects, including Shamima Akter.
The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement agencies have indicated that further arrests may follow as more suspects are identified.
