The price of gold in Bangladesh has surged to a historic high, with the Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association (BAJUS) announcing its 18th price hike of the year — a move that continues to strain household budgets and reshape consumer behavior in the jewellery market.
Effective from Tuesday, the price of 22-carat gold has been set at Tk1,72,545 per bhori (11.664 grams), marking an increase of Tk4,712 from the previous rate of Tk1,67,833, which was adjusted just a day earlier.
This latest revision comes despite already elevated domestic prices compared to the global market.
BAJUS has attributed the hike to a continued upward trend in international gold rates, though its frequent adjustments often outpace global forecasts.
In 2025 alone, BAJUS has raised gold prices 18 times while reducing them on only six occasions — a pattern that underscores growing volatility in the precious metals market.
Breakdown of New Prices (Effective Tuesday):
22-carat (hallmarked): Tk1,72,545 per bhori
21-carat: Tk1,64,695 per bhori
18-carat: Tk1,41,169 per bhori
Traditional method:Tk1,16,779 per bhori
Previous Rates (Monday):
22-carat: Tk1,67,833 per bhori
21-carat: Tk1,60,205 per bhori
18-carat: Tk1,37,309 per bhori
Traditional method: Tk1,13,491 per bhori
Despite the surge in gold prices, the cost of silver has remained unchanged.
BAJUS also reiterated that gold and silver prices must include a 5% VAT as mandated by the government, along with a 6% minimum wage for jewellery artisans — elements that further elevate retail prices.
As a result, the cost of a 22-carat gold ornament now stands at approximately Tk1,91,545 per bhori — the highest recorded in Bangladesh’s history.
The steep price trajectory is driving many middle-income consumers to reconsider gold purchases altogether, with a noticeable shift toward alternative, more affordable metals in jewellery buying.
Market analysts suggest that unless international trends stabilize or import costs are addressed, domestic gold prices could remain volatile in the months ahead.
