National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah on Saturday night declared a new protest programme, titled ‘March to Jamuna,’ in response to what he described as the interim government’s failure to present a clear roadmap for banning the Awami League within its stated deadline.
The announcement came during a mass rally at Shahbagh around 8:45pm, where hundreds of demonstrators gathered, chanting slogans such as “Ban, ban Awami League,” before marching towards the Hotel InterContinental—located near the official residence of the Chief Adviser, known as Jamuna.
Security was visibly tightened in the area, with law enforcement erecting barricades around the hotel premises to prevent any escalation.
“We will wait for one hour,” Hasnat said earlier during the rally.
“If there is no declaration within that time, we will begin the March to Jamuna.”
The protest follows a series of demonstrations calling for the trial and banning of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
Protesters argue that the interim government, which came to power following the July mass uprising, has not followed through on its commitment to address these demands.
In a Facebook post earlier in the day, Hasnat alleged that certain groups had attempted to delegitimise or divide the protest movement.
“Let it be clear—this movement does not belong to any one party or ideology. People from all walks of life, along with political, social, and cultural organisations, are united in the call to ban the Awami League,” he wrote.
Hasnat also declared that all future programmes would be organised under the newly formed coalition banner: Fesibad Birodhi Jatiya Oikkya (National Unity Against Fascism).
