DE News Desk :
India has continued to push individuals across the border into Bangladesh, with the latest incidents occurring early Friday morning.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) confirmed that four more people were forced across the frontier — two in Dinajpur and two in Thakurgaon — bringing the total number of people pushed into Bangladesh since May 7 to over 500.
Despite heightened security by the BGB and local police, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has repeatedly sent individuals across the international boundary, including Bangladeshi nationals, Indian citizens, and reportedly some Rohingya.
According to BGB-42 Battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Al Moin, the four individuals detained on Friday — two women near the Bairuchuna border in Thakurgaon’s Pirganj upazila and two men near the Ramchandrapur border in Dinajpur’s Birol upazila — were all Bangladeshi citizens.
They were handed over to the respective police stations for further processing.
“The BSF’s 63rd Battalion pushed them across between midnight and 1:00am,” the BGB official said.
The latest incident follows a larger wave of pushbacks.
On Thursday alone, Indian forces reportedly pushed 105 people across the border through entry points in six districts: Cumilla, Feni, Panchagarh, Lalmonirhat, Moulvibazar, and Khagrachari.
India’s external affairs ministry, in a briefing on Thursday, acknowledged efforts to deport what it described as illegal migrants.
Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India had requested Bangladesh to verify the nationality of 2,369 individuals suspected to be Bangladeshi. He claimed the verification process had been pending for nearly five years.
“We have asked the Bangladeshi side to verify their nationality. We have a pending list of 2,369 people who are required to be deported,” Jaiswal said.
Responding to the developments, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain told reporters in Dhaka on Wednesday that individuals confirmed to be Indian nationals would be returned to India.
He added that the Bangladesh home ministry is reviewing a list of alleged Bangladeshis provided by India.
According to BGB data, 429 people have been detained from border areas in Khagrachari, Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Feni, Cumilla, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, and Panchagarh since May 7.
One of the most controversial incidents occurred on May 9, when the BSF and Indian Navy allegedly forced 78 people — including three Indian nationals — into Bangladesh through the Mandarbaria area in the Sundarbans West Forest Zone, under the jurisdiction of the Satkhira range.
Bangladesh shares a 4,156-kilometre border with India, including approximately 180 kilometres across water bodies and 79 kilometres through the Sundarbans.
The scale and frequency of these pushbacks have raised serious concerns over border management and the bilateral protocol on repatriation and verification.
Authorities in Dhaka continue to urge New Delhi to follow established procedures and ensure that repatriation takes place through mutual verification and formal diplomatic channels.
