The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained an Indian national for attempting to traffic two Bangladeshi women and a child across the Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah.
According to a BGB press release issued Friday, the arrested individual has been identified as Shankar Adhikari, 39, son of Nukul Adhikari from Purba Huda village under Bagda police station in India’s North 24 Parganas district.
Acting on a tip-off, a patrol team from the BGB Maheshpur Battalion intercepted Adhikari around 5:30 pm on Thursday in the Kanchanpur Bridge area, approximately one kilometre inside Bangladesh from border pillar 60/33-R.
During preliminary interrogation, Shankar confessed to entering Bangladesh three months ago through the Benapole border to visit his uncle in Madaripur, where he reportedly married a 13-year-old girl named Joybala.
He later returned to India with her.On April 17, 2025, Shankar allegedly re-entered Bangladesh and lured Joybala, her neighbour Yuthika Halder (29), and Halder’s 10-year-old son Badhan Baida to the Baghadanga border under the pretense of a leisure trip.
His intention, he admitted, was to smuggle them into India after striking a trafficking deal worth Tk 47,000 with a Bangladeshi broker named Anwar.
BGB personnel recovered Tk 50,110 in cash, 850 Indian rupees, and seven Omani rials from the accused.
Authorities are in the process of handing Shankar over to Maheshpur police, while the rescued women and child will be transferred to the care of Justice and Care, a non-governmental organization in Jashore.
