A six-month-old baby went missing on Friday night after a battery-run rickshaw plunged into an open roadside drain amid heavy water flow in the Kapasgola area of Chattogram city.
The incident occurred around 8:30pm near Nawab Hotel, according to Anwar Hossain, assistant director of the Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence.
The rickshaw, carrying a woman and her infant, reportedly lost control and veered into the open drain, which had a strong current due to recent rainfall.
The mother managed to escape, but the baby was swept away by the water.”Firefighters from the Chandanpura unit responded immediately and began search operations,” said Anwar Hossain.
“The strong current in the drain, caused by rainwater, made the rescue efforts extremely challenging.”
Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury visited the site around 9:00pm to oversee the ongoing rescue efforts.
“Rescuing the missing child is our highest priority,” the mayor told reporters, adding that fire service diving units and CCC cleaning crews have been deployed to aid in the search.
