After more than three decades, Jahangirnagar University is finally set to hold its long-awaited Central Students Union (JUCSU) election, with voting scheduled for July 31, 2025.
The announcement was made early Thursday by Vice-Chancellor Prof Kamrul Ahsan during a briefing in the administrative building’s council room.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Prof M Maniruzzaman from the Department of English followed up by revealing the full election schedule.
According to Article 8 of the JUCSU Constitution, elections for both JUCSU and Hall Parliament will be held simultaneously on July 31 from 9am to 5pm.
Vice-Chancellor Kamrul Ahsan also stated that all individuals—students, teachers, officials, or staff—implicated in the violent July 1993 incident on campus would be brought to justice by June 29.
CEC Maniruzzaman outlined the election roadmap, beginning with the publication of the draft voter list and draft code of conduct on May 12.
Objections and feedback will be accepted until May 21, and the final voter list and code will be published on June 30.
Candidates will be able to collect nomination papers from July 1 to 3, and submit them from July 1 to 7.
Following scrutiny, the draft list of candidates will be published on July 9.
Candidates will have until July 14 to withdraw, with the final list to be released the next day.
The election schedule was finalized after a 10-hour meeting on Tuesday evening with student representatives from various departments and student organisations.
Following the meeting, the administration agreed to announce the election timeline at 5:30am on Wednesday.
Since its establishment in 1972, JUCSU has held elections only eight times.
The last election took place in 1992, during the BNP government, when Masud Hasan Talukder was elected Vice President and Shamsul Tabriz became General Secretary.
The following year, after students attacked the Teachers’ Club on July 29, 1993, the administration dissolved JUCSU and hall parliaments. No elections have been held since.
The resumption of JUCSU elections marks a significant step toward restoring democratic student representation at Jahangirnagar University.
