BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on May 5, following a medical check-up in London, according to party officials.
BNP Standing Committee Member AZM Zahid Hossain confirmed that her health condition has improved and, if all goes according to plan, she will arrive in Dhaka on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight under special arrangements.
Khaleda Zia will be accompanied by her daughters-in-law — Dr. Zubaida Rahman, wife of Tarique Rahman, and Syeda Sharmila Rahman Sithi, widow of the late Arafat Rahman Koko.
The BNP chief has been in London since January 8 for advanced medical treatment and has been staying at her son Tarique Rahman’s residence since January 25 after 17 days of hospital care.
She celebrated Eid there with family.Khaleda Zia, a three-time former prime minister, has long suffered from multiple health issues, including liver cirrhosis, heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis.
She was previously imprisoned in 2018 following a conviction in a corruption case and was released during the COVID-19 pandemic under executive order.
Her legal cases were later quashed, allowing her to travel abroad for treatment.
BNP sources said Tarique Rahman is personally overseeing her return preparations, while her medical team continues to monitor her condition closely.
