A moderate earthquake shook Dhaka and several northeastern regions of Bangladesh in the early hours of Wednesday, sparking brief panic among residents. No casualties or significant damage have been reported so far.
The tremor, which struck at approximately 2:24am, registered a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The epicentre was pinpointed near Moirang in India’s Manipur state, roughly 39 kilometres from the state capital, Imphal.
The quake originated at a depth of 47 kilometres, a relatively shallow point that contributed to its wide felt impact across the region, including parts of northeastern Bangladesh and the capital, Dhaka.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also confirmed the seismic event, placing the epicentre at 24.49°N latitude.
Residents in Dhaka, Sylhet, and nearby districts reported mild to moderate shaking. Many said they were jolted awake by the tremor but returned to normal activities shortly afterward. Authorities have not received any immediate reports of structural damage or injuries.
Seismologists continue to monitor the situation, urging the public to remain cautious and aware of aftershock possibilities.
