Bangladesh’s interim government chief adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, is set to embark on an official visit to the United Kingdom shortly after Eid-ul-Azha, as part of efforts to reinvigorate bilateral relations and deepen cooperation in economic, trade, and investment sectors.
The visit is tentatively scheduled for June 9–13, a senior official told UNB on Tuesday, noting that both governments are currently working to finalise the visit’s agenda.
During his trip, Prof Yunus is expected to hold high-level meetings with King Charles and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
One of the key issues on the agenda will be the recovery of illicitly laundered money and assets held abroad.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur confirmed this during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Monday, stating that the chief adviser will raise the issue directly while in London.
The interim government has accused the previous administration of enabling the laundering of approximately $16 billion annually.
Prof Yunus had earlier sought assistance from the British government through its envoy in Dhaka to help track and recover funds allegedly siphoned to the UK by individuals linked to the former Sheikh Hasina-led government.
A delegation comprising senior officials from the Bangladesh Bank and the Anti-Corruption Commission will accompany the chief adviser to support discussions on asset recovery and financial accountability.
The upcoming UK trip follows Prof Yunus’s recent official visit to China and comes ahead of a planned visit to Japan later this month, as part of a broader diplomatic initiative to strengthen Bangladesh’s global partnerships.
