The bodies of two Bangladeshi brothers, Quamruzzaman Kakon, 26, and Kamrul Islam Sagor, 22, were discovered in a flat in the Saudi Arabian city of Dammam on Wednesday, sparking allegations of murder from their family in Gazipur, Bangladesh.
Saudi police recovered the bodies after the landlord of the apartment alerted authorities upon noticing blood seeping from under the door.
CCTV footage reportedly identified a suspect named Manju, but no official confirmation has been released by Saudi authorities.
The victims’ father, Md Mosharraf Hossain Lombari of Uttar Bhurulia in Gazipur, has accused a local recruiting agent in Bangladesh, Bahar Uddin, of orchestrating a fraudulent migration scheme that ultimately led to the deaths of his sons.
A Tale of Broken Promises and Rising Suspicion
According to Mosharraf, his elder son Kakon had completed a BSc in engineering and was seeking employment when Bahar Uddin, director of Samia International in Dhaka’s Naya Paltan, promised to secure him a job in Canada for Tk 2.1 million.
After an advance payment of Tk 300,000, the deal failed to materialize.
Later, Bahar offered to send the younger son, Sagor, to Saudi Arabia for a fee of Tk 430,000.
Sagor left for Dammam in October 2024, but soon after, the family alleges he was held captive and a ransom of Tk 400,000 was demanded.
Though Mosharraf paid the money, Sagor was reportedly forced into work as a food delivery driver for a platform called Hungerstation.
Following further requests for repayment or a job for Kakon, Bahar instead promised employment at the Islamic University of Madinah and took an additional Tk 530,000.
Kakon flew to Saudi Arabia on December 4, 2024, but according to his family, he too was held in confinement alongside his brother and subjected to similar working conditions.
In a troubling development, Mosharraf said Bahar then invited him to Saudi Arabia on an Umrah visa to visit his sons.
During the trip, Mosharraf was allegedly handed a polythene bag by Bahar and asked to take it back to Dhaka.
He claims he was unaware of the contents. Saudi airport authorities searched the bag and removed a parcel, after which he was allowed to board his return flight on December 22.
Bahar later demanded the return of the parcel, claiming it contained Tk 1.3 million worth of gold, and allegedly issued threats against Mosharraf’s sons when the request was denied.
Fearing for their safety, Mosharraf lodged a general diary at the Gazipur Sadar Police Station.
On May 9, unidentified men reportedly stormed Mosharraf’s residence with weapons, allegedly taking his elderly father hostage and threatening to kill the brothers.
The situation was defused after police were alerted through emergency hotline 999.
Shocking News from Abroad
Around midnight on Wednesday, the family received a call from a Bangladeshi expatriate in Saudi Arabia, informing them that both brothers had been killed.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh later confirmed their deaths, citing that the brothers entered the flat at around 7:00 AM on Tuesday.
In a statement to the media, Mosharraf accused Bahar of orchestrating the murders and appealed to the Bangladesh government for assistance in bringing the bodies home and ensuring justice.
Calls for Action
The family is demanding a full investigation into the suspected human trafficking network and the alleged role of Bahar Uddin in both the financial fraud and the possible murders.
They have urged the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intervene.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Saudi Arabia has stated that it is in touch with local authorities and is working to facilitate the repatriation of the deceased.
