The United Arab Emirates has reached an agreement with Israel to facilitate the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid to Gaza, the UAE’s state news agency WAM reported on Tuesday.
The understanding was achieved during a phone conversation between UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, amid growing international concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the besieged enclave.
According to WAM, the initial phase of aid will focus on meeting the immediate food needs of approximately 15,000 civilians in Gaza.
The shipment will also include critical supplies for local bakeries and infant care.
The move comes as international pressure mounts on Israel, with global leaders urging restraint and increased humanitarian access.
On Tuesday, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced that the EU would review its trade agreement with Israel in light of what she described as the “catastrophic” situation in Gaza.
Earlier the same day, the United Nations humanitarian office in Geneva confirmed that Israel had authorized the entry of approximately 100 aid trucks into Gaza, a significant increase after months of restricted access.
Since March, Israel has blocked the regular flow of medical supplies, food, and fuel into Gaza, sparking fears of widespread famine.
Although some aid trucks were allowed in earlier this week, humanitarian agencies continue to warn of a worsening crisis.
Israel’s military launched a new ground and air operation in Gaza last week, intensifying its campaign against Hamas.
According to health officials in the territory, more than 500 people have been killed by Israeli strikes over the past eight days.
The Israeli government has stated its intention to expand its control over Gaza, following Hamas’ deadly cross-border assault in October 2023.
