Bangladesh has recorded one new dengue-related death in the past 24 hours, raising the official death toll for 2024 to 20, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The latest fatality occurred in Barishal, where the patient had been undergoing treatment.
This is the first reported dengue death since April 25.In the same 24-hour period, 29 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country, bringing the total number of hospitalisations this year to 2,572.
Of the new cases, four were reported within Dhaka city, while the remainder were spread across the Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Barishal divisions — with Barishal alone accounting for 22 new admissions.
As of Wednesday, 139 dengue patients are receiving treatment in hospitals nationwide.
Among them, 49 are in Dhaka and 90 are in other parts of the country.Dengue remains a pressing public health concern in Bangladesh.
In 2024, the country has already seen 101,214 hospitalisations due to the mosquito-borne disease, making it the third-highest annual figure on record.
The 575 deaths reported last year stand as the second-highest since the DGHS began tracking dengue data in 2000.
The worst outbreak occurred in 2023, with 321,179 hospitalisations and 1,705 fatalities — both record highs.
Health authorities continue to urge the public to take preventive measures against Aedes mosquito breeding as the country approaches peak transmission season.
